    Fern Forest

    This is the trail worth taking. A short, moderate climb lands you in another world, a hidden gem. Jurassic style.

    Start at the Summit Creek parking lot and walk past the gate and over the bridge, approximately 125 m. Turn left onto what remains of the old asphalt road and follow it to the end. The trail begins in a small gap between two large boulders. The path opens into a broad woodland clearing (keep to the left), then meanders into a treed area and skirts alongside a chain-link fence before passing beneath Highway 3. From there, continue following the well-worn footpath that hugs Summit Creek. You’ll soon reach a fork marked by the Fern Forest Trail registration box—take the left-hand fork to begin the Fern Forest route (the right fork continues on Summit Creek Trail).

    The Fern Forest Trail climbs steadily via steep switchbacks, ascending a forested ridge before descending into a lush fern-draped marsh. Along the way, you’ll connect with both the Mount Creston and Balancing Rock Trail systems. Trail markers will help guide your way.

    Family-friendly. All dogs must be kept on a leash, and pet owners must pick up after their pet(s).

    This area is an active bear area. Be sure to carry bear spray and know how to use it. Make noise on the trail, stay alert, and hike in groups when possible.

    History of the Trail

    In early 2024, Trails for Creston Valley Society (TCVS) navigated through thoughtful planning and approvals to solidify the future of the Fern Forest Trail. By mid 2024 TCVS submitted a Section 57 application to Recreation Sites and Trails BC (RSTBC)—a legally required step in the Forest Recreation Regulations, outline the requirements for establishing, authorizing, and managing recreation sites and trails—to officially include the trail in our Partnership Agreement for long-term maintenance and sustainable improvements.

    After careful review and collaboration with RSTBC and local partners, the application was approved in May 2025, marking a major milestone in recognizing Fern Forest as a formally authorized recreation trail Trails for Creston Valley Society. This means TCVS can now maintain the trail confidently, implement future upgrades, and ensure safe public access—without compromising environmental or regulatory standards.

    Fern Forest is more than just a connector between Balancing Rock and Summit Creek Trails—it's now officially part of Creston Valley's protected trail network, thanks to community commitment and shared stewardship.
