Monk Lake Trail

A compact and rewarding alpine hike, Monk Lake delivers big scenery in a relatively short distance. Rocky scramble sections add a bit of adventure, and hikers who push beyond the lake are treated to extraordinary views stretching all the way to Boundary Lake.

Rated Moderate. Well-marked and maintained with some scrambling required on rocky sections. Wet creek crossings possible early season.4.4 km370 m gain3.5 hSummer, FallDogs allowed, on leash

The trail is well marked and maintained throughout, making navigation straightforward — but there are a few things to prepare for. Two small creeks cross the route and are not currently bridged. Wet feet are a real possibility, particularly early in the season, so waterproof footwear is a good idea. Three short sections climb through rocks and require some minor scrambling. Take care on these sections, especially when wet, as rocks can be slippery.

At the lake, hikers will find a scramble route adjacent to a scree slope that leads to the ridge between Monk and Nun Lakes. The view from the ridge is exceptional — both lakes spread out below, with Boundary Lake visible in the distance on a clear day. It is well worth the extra effort.

    Getting There

Access is via the Maryland and Monk Creek FSRs from Hwy 3. Follow the Maryland FSR and veer right at km 13.2 — look for the sign to Ripple Ridge Cabins. Continue on the Monk Creek FSR to km 19.4. Parking is on the right; the trailhead is on the left.

⚠️ Trail Conditions Note: As of summer 2026, a wildfire (Fire N71932) is burning in the area above the Nun Creek FSR, between the Nun Lakes and Monk Lake trails. The fire is approximately 2 km from the Monk Lake trailhead. Before heading out, please check the BC Wildfire Map for Fire N71932 for current conditions and any travel restrictions.
