Nun Lake
For those who make it, the reward is a remote alpine lake in a landscape that feels genuinely untouched — the kind of place that takes some earning.
The Nun Lake Trail is a wilderness route in the truest sense — remote, rugged, and deeply rewarding for hikers who are comfortable with route-finding and backcountry navigation. This is not a maintained trail in the conventional sense; it demands experience, self-sufficiency, and a genuine sense of adventure.
The trailhead is now located at Nun Creek. Begin by crossing Nun Creek — there is no bridge, so be prepared to ford. From the crossing, follow an old logging road for approximately 2.8 km to the original trailhead. The trail is not well marked at this point and can be difficult to locate — patience and route-finding confidence are essential.
Once past the original trailhead, a steep 700 m climb through rocks and brush brings you to the ridge. The remaining kilometre to the lower lake is heavily overgrown and can be hard to follow. This trail is recommended only for experienced hikers who are comfortable navigating in terrain without clear markers or maintained paths.
Getting There
Access is via the Maryland and Monk Creek FSRs from Hwy 3. Follow the Maryland FSR and veer right at km 13.2 — look for the sign to Ripple Ridge Cabins. Continue on the Monk Creek FSR to km 17.9. Turn left immediately after crossing a bridge and continue 4 km on the Nun Creek FSR — note that this road is not marked — to the unmarked trailhead at Nun Creek.
The Nun Creek FSR is not maintained but was cleared of encroaching alders by TCVS volunteers in June 2026. The road is suitable only for high-clearance vehicles used with care. Please note that the road beyond Nun Creek is non-motorized.
